The barn owl saga continues. On Friday evening when our transport volunteers (a couple of really amazing people, Deborah and Patrick) took the original nestling back to re-nest, they found two more. They found that there were two separate cavities/nest sites in the tree. The original nest cavity was severely contaminated with tree sap / organic debris. The opening was about 14 feet up in the tree and then it dropped about 4 feet deep inside the trunk of a tree. The original nestling and one extremely soiled sibling were found in this location. A Go-Pro was used to verify no further siblings were present, and the volunteers boarded the entrance to this cavity. The second cavity was much cleaner and contained another sibling, who was only mildly to moderately soiled, along with a clean parent. The volunteers confirmed that the birds could not get to the first cavity from this cavity, then re-nested the original (newly bathed) nestling into this cavity. After a bath yesterday, we are returning the remaining sibling this afternoon - unfortunately the extremely soiled sibling did not make it. Both nestlings will now have one clean cavity to use. We wish all three could have survived but unfortunately it was not the case. We are very lucky to have volunteers like Patrick and Deborah that are willing to sacrifice their weekend to make this happen. They went above and beyond the simple call to transport.
