Injury cause: fish hookIt isn’t uncommon for us to admit raptors with injuries caused by fishing hooks. Typically it is species that hunt near or on or in water - osprey, eagles, barred owls, red-shouldered hawks, etc. Typically NOT red-tailed hawks. Juvenile red-tailed hawk patient #21819 arrived 3 weeks ago with a treble hook stuck in the tissue around his eye. Not IN his eye - thank goodness - which is amazingly lucky. After carefully removing the three prongs from various areas around his eye while under anesthesia, we were able to see that the eye itself was undamaged. Another major problem was his body condition. Considering it is hard to hunt with a fishing hook holding your eye shut, he was severely emaciated. But in the past few weeks, he has almost doubled his weight and is now in a flight cage. The prognosis is very good for him to be back at it soon and hopefully staying away from sharp objects. -- source link
