Be Grateful for Those Who Disagree with YouNorth Korea is an example of a society with extreme government control.Somalia is an example of a society with extremely minimal government control.Whichever extreme you’re more afraid of at any given time determines where you fall on the political spectrum, and whether you advocate generally for more or for less regulation.Either you’re scared of losing your freedoms and having others impose too many controls onto you, or you’re scared of chaos ensuing and running amuck because there aren’t enough controls on society at large.This is a game of tug of war that will never end, and at a deep level we can be grateful for that. The advanced systems and lifestyles we’re able to lead today are the product of thousands upon thousands of years of disagreement, discussion, innovation and calibration. It’s all resulted in a very delicate balance. In order for society to function, the rope needs to be slack, and we need to have people on the other side of us who disagree with us and pull in the opposite direction.We all have different ideas around where the perfect middle should lie, but if the rope gets pulled too far in either direction, any history book shows that all of us end up much worse off.So even when we disagree with others, remember that they are playing a vital role by caring as much as you do for maintaining this balance. The most dangerous thing we do is assign malicious intent far too often at times when the truth is merely a difference of opinion in how to keep things in balance.We’re all afraid of something. It’s human to be scared. We need to try to understand what we are afraid of, why, and why someone else believes the thing they’re afraid of is a higher priority and a greater danger than the thing we are afraid of. We shouldn’t demonize others for being scared; after all, we wouldn’t be so passionate about a certain issue if we weren’t also scared of something.Sometimes we need to forget the labels, forget what we think we know, and just listen to each other and try to understand different perspectives. Society cannot exist in its current form without civil discourse and the free flow of a wide variety of ideas.Though malicious intent and extreme ignorance do exist, it’s infinitesimally smaller than we think it is.
