In April of 1947, the legendary Jackie Robinson made his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers—just down the street at Ebbets Field—and became the first Black player in modern Major League Baseball. Roberto Lugo’s work seen above, “Brooklyn Century Vase,” features a portrait of Robinson in uniform. Lugo presents an alternative to Karl Mueller’s “Century Vase” (1876, pictured second), replacing portraits of George Washington and other symbols with tributes to figures who, like Robinson, played a significant role in Brooklyn’s history.
