Ok, while I’m fangirling over my favorite dieties, can I just give a big shout out to Pele, Hawaiian volcano goddess? She’s up there with Kali is my favorites. I have several books on Hawaiian mythology, and I think at least 50% of them are just about her. She is a really interesting, multifaceted character, but her main attributes are her fiery temper and wrath as well as her pride. In more modern times, she is portrayed as a staunch defendant of Hawaii’s original culture against the encroaching foreign influence- some locals still give her offerings to show their respect. Also, she really likes holua sledding. (Sledding on grass). But you’d better be careful about winning against her, or when you look back you might find yourself racing a towering lava flow. -- source link
