Carla could hardly believe her daughter was graduating from school. Laura’s childhood seemed to go so fast, before Carla knew it her little girl was grown and about to leave home. Laura had been talking about university for months. She was waiting impatiently for her year 12 results. It seemed like only yesterday that Carla had done the same. Carla watched with envy and sadness as her little girl stood on the precipice of a new life of adventure and challenge. Carla’s own dreams had taken a twisted turn not long after she had embarked on a similar journey with her meeting Nate and soon after finding herself pregnant with Laura. Obviously, she hoped Laura would make better choices. Not that Carla would change what happened. It was impossible anyway. She just hoped for a different journey for Laura.Carla had tried to apologise to Laura after everything seemed to turn sour between them but she never quite felt heard or accepted. Laura seemed fine with her but kept her at a distance. Yet, Laura’s relationship with Nate appeared to grow in intimacy. Carla couldn’t help but often feel left out. It was her own fault at the end of the day. She could hardly expect a different outcome or for Laura to feel differently than she did.Carla had brought it on herself.Nate was talking of moving back to the city once Laura had moved and was settled into the university she chose. Carla wondered what her own future would bring. Two of her favourite people would be gone from her day to day life and how did Matty feel about losing his sister and his dad? Carla was surely no compensation for the two of them? There were some tough conversations in front of her, she was certain. And she was not looking forward to them. Sure, Matty was an easy going child. As Laura had been when she was young. But what if?It was those ‘what ifs’ that haunted Carla at night when she needed to be sleeping. Another thing that kept her awake was wondering what to do with herself. She couldn’t keep living off her savings forever. Eventually, she would have to find some kind of work. She couldn’t imagine doing anything other than working in a lab or some type of science facility. She had considered crossing over into healthcare. Perhaps she could work in a lab there? Space travel and exploration could be a hobby. The prospect didn’t excite her. In fact, it depressed her. And the last thing she wanted was to end up in that cycle of emotions. -- source link
