monthofloveart: ‘Gold and Wax’ By Jeszika Le Vye Created for the 2018 Month of Love challenge: ‘Yellow’. I have been working on creating a book of paintings, themed around Egyptian Mythology. For Month of Love, I wanted to paint one of the most incredible Egyptian love stories, that of Isis resurrecting her murdered husband Osiris. If you would like to see more of my Egyptian paintings, take a peek through my Patreon page! Osiris and Isis were two of the earliest Egyptian Gods, created by Geb, the earth and Nut, the sky. The two were married and made a beloved pair to the Egyptians, ruling all the fertile lands. Osiris had green skin, the color of rebirth and fertile life. They had two more siblings, who also were married - Nephthys, Anubis’s mother and goddess of death and mystery, and Set, ambitious, prideful, chaotic Set. Set and Nephthys rules the desolate lands, the unfertile lands away from the Nile. Nephthys was at home in the unknown lands and her and her sister balanced and loved each other, both caring for childbearing women; both a natural piece to the beginning and end of life. But Set was not so content with his role in this new world. He envied his brother the fertile lands he ruled, he envied the love he had of the mortals. So he plotted to take those from him. He tricked Osiris into stepping into a coffin, then sealed it shut and threw him in the Nile. Isis, stricken with grief turned to her sister, Nephthys. They turned into hawks and searched the great river for him. Finally, Isis found the coffin lodged in a tree and was able to free him. This only made Set even more determined. He returned again and this time, not only murdered Osiris but cut his body into many pieces and threw them all into the Nile. But grief could not stop Isis. Again she searched for him. She found all the pieces of her beloved that had been scattered into the river and set to work. Using gold and wax, the goddess put him back together piece by piece until her beloved was whole. Osiris was resurrected in a new form, and he became the lord of the underworld, judge of the dead. But even in this new form, he was beloved, not only by Isis but by the mortal humans. Even as ruler of the dead, Osiris was also called: King of the Living, as the Egyptians considered the blessed dead to be ‘the living ones’. Not only was he a merciful judge, but also was the force in the underworld that allowed all life, including plants and the flooding of the Nile. He also became known as, The Lord of Love. Isis’s love for him had not only transcended death, it transformed him into greater form. The two remained together throughout history and bore a child, Horus, who became one of the greatest, most revered gods of Egypt.
