eriebasin:Late 1700s Mourning Ring, Miniature of Ship and Anchor, with Hair and Sepia Decoration, 9K (sold)It’s been a while since we’ve had a nice Georgian-era mourning ring. Over the years we’ve had a number with urns and willows– the most typical imagery for 18th century mourning. But ships are very uncommon. In relation to mourning, they’re generally a symbol for passage into the afterlife. The foreground of the image here sets up an additional allusion, with an anchor resting on the shore acting as a symbol of hope for those left behind. If you look carefully, the image is composed mostly of sepia ink on ivory, but the golden details in the ship are tiny bits of hair. -- source link
