luciferlaughs: The first living creature to orbit the earth was Laika, a stray dog that was found wandering the streets of Moscow. On November 3rd, 1957, Laika was launched on a one-way trip on board the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2. The dog, unfortunately, did not make it. Within hours of blast-off, Laika died from overheating and panic. Sputnik 2 was not designed to be retrievable–Laika was always intended to die in space. The inhumane mission ignited much outrage and debate all across the globe on animal testing for the purpose of science advancement. One of the scientists responsible for launching Laika into space, Oleg Gazenko, expressed remorse for allowing her to die: ‘’Work with animals is a source of suffering to all of us. We treat them like babies who cannot speak. The more time passes, the more I’m sorry about it. We shouldn’t have done it…we did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog.’‘ -- source link
