Lophotostemon confertus is a member of the Myrtaceae family and bears some resemblance to Eucalyptus plants, particularly in the seed pods which are conical and dehisce, revealing clear geometric patterns. Native to Australia, this tree is commonly used in California for an easy-to-grow street plant with resistance to disease and smog. You can find them scattered throughout the Los Angeles area, in my observation most prevalent in parking lots as smallish trees. The fruits usually remain attached to the branch after releasing seed, starting out green and drying/oxidizing to a rough brown over the following seasons. -- source link
