Camphor glass was the one of the first styles of antique jewelry I fell in love with and is still one of my very favorites to collect. Just look how pretty it is! All mist and moonbeams, delicate as a whisper and as romantic as lace. Mr. DitL bought me this beauty as a Valentine’s Day present early in our relationship after we saw it together at a local vintage store. Camphor glass was wildly popular in the Art Deco era as a more affordable alternative to the pricier rock crystal trend, which was all the rage among luxury jewelers in the 1920s. Camphor glass really is glass, but it is treated with acid vapor to create the frosted finish. Vintage camphor glass jewelry can be relatively affordable if you find it in silver, but prices vary greatly depending on the complexity of the design. If you’re on the hunt, beware of reproductions - this style inspired a line of Avon jewelry in the 1970s that I often see listed erroneously as antique on eBay and Etsy.
