Okay look, I don’t want to waste anybody’s time here, so I’ll make this quick:If you’re not watching My Dress-Up Darling, you’re missing out on something really special.Yes, it’s a slice-of-life rom-com anime about cosplay, and yes, it’s a very horny show. But if you can get past the impossibly cringe title and the questionable amount of initial fan service, you’ll find a wholesome, earnest, heartwarming (and often heartbreaking) celebration of pursuing our passions, starring two protagonists so unapologetically endearing that you will fall in love with at least one of them.I don’t binge anything, no matter how much I like what I’m watching. I’m also not really fanatical about anime or manga (despite all evidence to the contrary in my archive). So when I say that I watched the first two available episodes and enjoyed what I saw so much that I proceeded to read all 70-something chapters of the manga, and then impatiently waited for the anime to bring those scenes to life week after week…yeah, this is a damn good show.(Fun Fact: The last scene of episode 8 is some of the absolute best TV I’ve ever seen, animated or otherwise. Like, holy hell, beautiful stuff.)A lot of introspective on keeping parts of yourself repressed out of fear of being judged, the importance of self-reflection, questioning whether you’ll ever be good enough for anyone (or, most importantly, yourself), and that bizarre feeling of freedom when you find someone you can unconditionally share yourself with.It dives into the sad frustration we can feel having someone wonderful come into our lives who we don’t feel worthy of, the baggage we bring with us into every relationship that can cost us our happiness. But then it turns around and shows us the unbelievable patience that the right person will show as we figure it all out. Never pushing us, but rather choosing to walk at our pace without sacrificing who they are, gently guiding us via their kindness, energy, and passion for life. And this dynamic goes both ways. This isn’t just another case of “perfect waifu saves sad author insert boy”. No, there’s actual nuanced character growth happening between both characters here. They compliment each other, encouraging each others strengths and covering their weaknesses. As the show goes on, you slowly realize that these two complete opposites are actually pretty perfect for each other in very believable ways. All of this wrapped up in a story of young love so unbelievably genuine that it can almost feel nostalgic at times. I can’t remember the last time I saw the emotion of “physically falling in love for the first time” portrayed on-screen as accurately as this show does it.Many manly tears were shed watching this fucking thing. There’s one episode left this season, more than enough time to catch up. The ecchi-ness of it all won’t be for everyone, but if any of what I said speaks to you, please don’t sleep on this show. I fucking returned to my censored porn Tumblr account to advertise it, that should say something. -- source link
