thecrankyprofessor:An array of brass aquamaniles at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. An aquamanile is a fancy pitcher (sometimes they have pour spouts - see bottom right of array) or water dispenser (sometimes they have taps - usually in the center of the beast’s chest) for washing ones hands before or after a meal. They were probably made as a set with a basin, but none that I know of are associated with their original basins. They were common from the 13th C to the 15th C.These are in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam - they quite possibly were made in the Low Countries - the Meuse Valley has been a center of the metal trade since the High Middle Ages. -- source link
