stevenkwlim: Hey everyone. A few days ago, as I was getting into an elevator, I asked if the person behind me would be willing to wait for the next one. (The elevator policy written on the wall was to limit capacity due to COVID). The gentleman slowly looked up from his phone and at my face. Then he remarked, “Oh. You’re Asian, I don’t f*ck with your race.” Taken aback, all I could think to say as the elevator door closed behind me was “BRO, THAT’S RACIST.”This is not new. I’ve been harassed in the past for being Asian and it has spiked since the pandemic started (and I rarely leave my apartment now). Even worse, these racist people have been targeting the more vulnerable in our community, including the elderly. By now, you may have seen the videos of people harming, robbing, and murdering our elders in broad daylight. So, what can be done about this? For one, you can start by learning more about why these issues persist and having conversations with your trusted friends and family. (Thank you for listening and getting this far into my post) Secondly, I wanted to take a moment to share the hard work that is being done by the people on the ground working to dismantle racism against our AAPI community and other communities of color. You can donate your time or money to a number of local and national community organizations - find the one that resonates with you most. If you want to join me, I will be supporting the @hateisavirus_ commuNITY Action Fund that will give back to local and national community organizations including programs related to mental health, better protections for our elderly, solidarity-building and more.
