y2kaestheticinstitute: Klinik Hairdresser - London, UK (Sept. 1998) - By 24/seven designers“For the Klinik hairdressing salon in London’s East End, 24/seven focused on one key concept—to create a clinical space that adhered to the highly mannered activity of hairdressing. This was applied to all aspects of the design from the furnishings down to the signage and all graphic identity, such as business cards and letterheads. Influence was drawn on medical aesthetics to create an uncluttered and highly functional space with a degree of theatricality. Emphasis was placed on the vanity of the customer and to allow the client a degree of control over the environment. This is manifested in the positioning of CCTV cameras above each chair. An image is then relayed to the monitors at the base of each mirror. This allows a simultaneous double view of the head—one directly in front (the mirror) and one at the side through the monitor. The idea plays on the fascination of viewing a detached image of oneself from the perspective of an observer, so simultaneously one is the observer and also the observed.”Great example of the Gen-X Soft Club aesthetic! In particular the sterile, sleek space with medical/clinic influences and commentary on surveillance & media culture of the time. -- source link
