Eddie won in a tough field in 2015, where talent and performance reigned, and no one knew until his name was announced that he had pulled out the Oscar win. His Oscar is not tainted by a deep diversity controversy nor by being awarded through a sense of pity or entitlement. 2. Think about last September and the speculation of who would be nominated. Jake Gyllenhaal had a couple highly touted films, and Johnny Depp was thought to be a shoo-in for Black Mass. And there were so many others mentioned along the way. Eddie was one of five who was nominated – and for the second consecutive year. That is a major achievement and honor in itself. 3. And take pleasure in the Best Supporting Actor award to Mark Rylance. His was based on pure performance. He didn’t campaign (he was working too hard to do so), he was not well-known among Oscars voters, and he was in a race with a sentimental, emotional favorite – who again, was being touted because his Oscar was “long overdue.” Mark Rylance beat all the odds. And best of all, he cast Eddie in his first big professional break, in Twelfth Night. To add to that, as far as I understand if I`m not mistaken (I didn`t check but I`m pretty sure Rylance has got both Tony and Laurence Olivier), Mark Rylance just became the third actor ever to have won all four acting awards in English language world. The first two being Eddie and Kevin Spacey. Mark Rylance was just nominated for an Olivier award, so even if he’s not already a winner of said award his chances are high that he might be in a few weeks. Edit: I just looked it up he has not one, but three Tony awards, one Olivier award. I was sure he won Olivier before - he is a VERY prominent stage actor, he only recently shifted his agressive activity into movies. -- source link
