When you talk about raising the minimum wage or social security people get very uncomfortable. People say: “It wouldn’t help, everything else will just get more expensive.” Or “Go back to school and get an education” How about “people need to learn to budget and live off of what they have” Do a lot of people have strict money budgeting skills, maybe not. But I know that after moving to a different state and waiting for my license to transfer that our economic situation is very unfair and has you set up for stagnation to say the least. The median gross rent for the United States in 2014 was $934. I know for a fact that you don’t find anything worth living in, near a metropolitan area (which is where the jobs are) for less than $700. Add at least $100 for electric. Now you can experiment with your food bill but the lowest I’ve been able to get it down to is about $60 a week for two people. And let me tell you… You’re not consuming enough calories to be active. You’re keeping your body Alive. So add another $400 a month for two people to eat healthy and have enough calories available for exertion. The cheapest healthcare available to me is $170 a month. And trust me it doesn’t cover shit and the doctors in your network aren’t worth having… Mind you this doesn’t include dental. Which is $100 for a cleaning and a check up. God forbid if you have to have any work done. Car insurance. And a car payment. Well maybe you can save up for a car and not need a payment. We can tally up that probability at the end. Insurance and payment run us around $400 and from what I understand… That’s about average. Notice I didn’t include a phone bill, Internet, tv. I’m speaking on bare necessities. $7.25/hour x’s 40 hrs a week x’s 4 weeks x’s 2 people $2,320 Oh wait forgot Uncle Sam. Let’s take about 30% of that. That leaves two people a monthly income of $1,624 a month. So for two people food… Shelter… Transportation… Minimal healthcare coverage… You’re looking at $1,940 a month. This article didn’t include surprise costs ($500 insurance deductibles, vet, dental, medical bills, clothes or raising children) #raisetheminimumwage -- source link
