Dov “Uzi the Gingi” BermanDov was born in Tel Aviv in 1927. Although a member of the Hashomer Hatzair youth movement, his opposition to the movement’s policy of passiveness and restraint against the British led him to the service of the Lehi (Stern Group) at the young age of 17.As per the clandestine tradition of the Underground, Dov left his civilian name behind and was nicknamed Uzi. Due to his distinguished red hair, he became known to everyone as Uzi HaGingi (lit. Uzi the Redhead).Despite his young age, Uzi participated in numerous operations that proved him to be one of the Lehi’s bravest and most prominent members. In 1946, Uzi was arrested after participating in a mission in which the Lehi sabotaged railroad workshops in Haifa. He was interred in the infamous Latrun detention camp, but managed to escape and return to the Underground to participate in many more operations. After Israel declared her independence, Dov joined a commando unit in the IDF that was under the command of Moshe Dayan. However, when his battalion was asked to partake in the military action against the Irgun ship, Altalena, Uzi left to join the ranks of the Lehi in Jerusalem. On July 10, 1948, Dov was killed while fighting in Kiryat Yovel, Jerusalem. He was 21. Two years later in 1950, he was brought over to the National Military Cemetery in Mount Herzl and laid to restMy Nation Lives עמי-חי -- source link
