I’m not sure “alchemical” is an actual word, but it sounded good in my head so I wrote it down. I was thinking how answers from the Spirit world come in many different forms and often we’re not even aware that we’ve been answered at all. I was thinking about that while I made this particular card for an, as yet, unnamed Tarot deck. Here are my notes:In this design Syssk is too busy learning the Occult to pay attention to what is around her. Even though this Tarot deck is set in Medieval Japan she’s still painting a picture of the four suits of the Minor Arcana: Pentagrams, Wands, Swords and Cups. Perhaps her drummer friend was keeping a beat to help her fall into a trance-like state, the sort that we’re told is important for Shamanic journeying. Whatever the case, Syssk is completely oblivious to the figure standing close by. I often find that people, in their pursuit of knowledge, completely ignore the mundane elements of their own world. Perhaps Syssk even prayed to be a powerful magician. Stopping to chat to a passing stranger is the last thing that she has on her mind, since clearly there are new formulas to learn, new gods to pray to, new metaphysics to get lost in …… which is a shame, since it isn’t actually her neighbor, Old Man Takahashi, standing in front of her; rather, it’s a kitsune, a fox spirit, which possesses more magic in one paw than anything that a baby necromancer could ever hope to learn from in a book. Her drummer friend clearly sees behind the fox’s disguise but, sadly, Syssk does not, being too focused on learning other people’s magic that she believes is the only way to talk to the Gods. It’s not the ability to pronounce Latin spellwork correctly that will let you reach out to the Divine, nor the proper sprinkling of salt to make a circle, nor knowing the names of all the Eight Devils of Kimon (Genma Himuro, Tessai, Benisato, Mushizō, Mujūrō Utsutsu, Shijima, Yurimaru and Zakuro, just in case you were curious) but, rather: intensity, passion, humility and a profound awareness of the world around you that will strengthen the bonds between you. From my own experience the Spirit world does answer my questions, but since I’m mortal, with a limited ability to understand the celestial Mysteries, the answer usually comes in simple forms that I’ll understand, not the booming voice of God from Monty Python and the Holy Grail: -- source link
