Tipu’s Tiger, an automaton that was made for Tipu Sultan of Mysore in India during the 1700s. The 68-inch long device shows a tiger killing a British redcoat, representing the British East India Company, the enemy of the Sultan. The tiger and his victim can move and make noise – the tiger grunts and the man groans in pain. The tiger also has a built-in pipe organ in its side. British soldiers discovered the automaton when they took the Sultan’s palace in 1799.
