Welcome to get another @culturestrike editorial cartoon. Big news from this weekend: a group of Notre Dame graduates walked out when Mike Pence, Trump’s vice-president, began addressing the graduating class with his commencement speech. Pence later took to the media to express that he felt attacked and that his first amendment right was trampled by the students who walked out, conveniently leaving out that the students were also excersicing their first amendment right by walking out. In essence, Mike Pence confuses freedom of speech with idea that when someone speaks, everyone has to listen. The students didn’t inhibit Pence’s ability to speak. They didnt shout, didn’t attempt to take over the podium. All they did was stand and leave. Organizers of the walkout stated that they walked out because Pence, as former governor of Indiana and as current VP, has trampled over the rights of people based on their religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. And why should they sit at THEIR own graduation, which is supposed to be a day of celebration for them, and listen to a politician talk Trump politics? Also considering also that the VP has taken some intolerant approaches to dealing with his own constituents. Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from accountability. It doesn’t mean that others should be forced to listen to what you have to say. Freedom of speech also gives us the freedom to listen to whom we wish. The VP should really understand and take to heart that if you’re a politician, you should expect for people to treat you as one. Artwork by @juliosalgado83. Blurb by @eslvis. -- source link
