There will be self-doubts like “Is what I’m doing the right thing?”Koizuka: The highlights in the story are as Araki-san says. On the other hand, in terms of animation, the hesitation and frustration [The characters go through] during those fights are central to the action sequences - and those are completely different from their feelings during Titan battles. Additionally, when a certain plot point unravels, we’ve included types of special effects that have yet to be seen in the SnK anime. Something ridiculously huge will appear, so we implemented different SFX. Araki: In the source material, there is a sequence I’m personally anticipating the creation of. It’s when Eren struggles with his own “inferiority.” That portrayal of raw human anguish exceeds the emotions typically seen in shounen manga. I myself feel that the Eren who endures this inner conflict is more appealing than the one who screams, “I’ll eliminate all the Titans!” When I initially read that part in the manga, my appreciation for Eren increased tenfold. Whether it is structural composition or animation, season 3 differs from the previous 2 quite a lot - it almost feels like an entirely new series. Whether it is Eren, Levi, or other characters, the production now focuses on their innermost attributes, and it will be quite clear that up to now, we’ve only understood them on a surface level. Even just looking at a key animation draft, it’s apparent that this is not a direct extension of the previous seasons. Araki: When we discussed what the ending of season 3 should demonstrate with Isayama-sensei, his thought was something that was quite challenging to create. I thought, “Wow, if anyone can capture that, then they’re really impressive.” So I was quite excited. It’s a moment that will make the audience fidget in their seats, as if someone dragged a knife against the skin on their necks and broke through. Moreover…season 3 allowed us to enter a certain “forbidden territory.” It’s truly a stimulating piece of work that throws down the gauntlet.
