[Pictured: Mei from Turning Red being her exuberant fun self on the left, and myself as a 13 year old, overwhelmed by her energy, on the right. Yes, I did wear that sweater every day for three years.]I watched Turning Red, and while I was not like Mei at all as a kid, I would have benefited so greatly from this film as a young teenager. I repressed myself so much out of a desire to be seen as an adult, and now as an adult I’m still trying to embrace “the panda.”Also, it’s great to see female puberty explored in a fun yet normal and not gross-out way. I spent so much of my teenage years hiding/pretending not to be a girl because so much of female anatomy was taboo.Cute film, really well made, I really admire the team and all the love and talent poured into it. That said, I probably won’t revisit this film as much as other recent films, like Encanto. Personally, I think Turning Red is for a younger audience (and a specific age range of nostalgic millennials). Being niche isn’t a bad thing, this film deserves a chance no matter the viewer’s background, that‘s just how it landed for me. -- source link
