professorfalconerofficial: Health and Mood I’m not going to win a Nobel prize for the following statement, but your mood deeply affects all areas of your health. It’s a lot easier to be fit and healthy when you’re also happy, but chances are that if you’re wanting to change parts of your life, you’re already coming from a place of unhappiness. Otherwise, why change? That vicious little catch-22 is a major factor in why so many people who want to set sail on that course of health and fitness often have such difficulty in the beginning, with a lot of people eventually deciding to give up. Depression feeds on complacency, and boy is it a ravenous sucker. The status quo is exactly what depression likes, and it will fight you tooth and nail to keep things as they are so it can continue to thrive. It will do everything it can to convince you that changing is too hard, it’s not worth your time, or worst of all, it will slowly sap away your motivation and next thing you know it, you’re back to doing the stuff that’s going to keep you miserable. I can say I’ve fallen prey to all of those, time and time again. It’s no surprise that so many people are depressed and so few manage to learn how to cope with it and adapt. It’s a disease, pure and simple, and while medication does help, it’s only a bandage on a gaping wound unless its followed up with counseling or some sort of therapy and hard work in changing certain behaviors. Health and fitness isn’t just “What can I do to feel and look better?”, it’s also “How and why did I end up where I am now and what can I do to improve?” Health and fitness are extremely important, but don’t forget that your mind is just as important as your body, if not more so. Erase the stigma of “therapy=crazy”, that’s flat-out wrong, and see someone who can listen when you need a sounding board or a shoulder to cry on. Getting that kind of help shows not only great strength and courage, but also wisdom. And though it is definitely hard work, you will come out the other side with a whole new set of tools you can use to make a healthier and happier you. -Prof. Falconer WEAK PEOPLE NEVER CEASE TO AMAZE ME….
