2010′s Musical Thoughts #10- Newsies Newsies opened on Broadway on March 29th, 2012 and is based on the 1992 Disney musical movie of the same name. With music once again by the legendary composer Alan Menken, Newsies is inspired by the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City, and follows a scrappy group of newsboys (led by the charismatic Jack Kelly) who go on strike when newspaper magnate Joseph Pulitzer raises the price of the newspapers for the newsies, while keeping the selling price the same. Their strike gets noticed by young female news reporter Katherine Plumber, and a romance blossoms between her and Kelly. Out of all of the Disney movies to bring to Broadway, this one was the most surprising at first. Newsies was a box office bomb, and reviews weren’t so kind (with the film holding a 39% on Rotten Tomatoes). However, the movie has gotten something of a cult following since its release, which may have kept the movie in Disney’s eye. Whatever caused Disney to bring this relatively obscure movie to the stage, I’m glad it happened because the musical is incredible. It’s just loads of fun with some of the most addictive music I’ve ever heard and some of the most brilliant choreography on Broadway. This one holds such a special place in my heart because this was one of the first musicals that made me a Broadway fan. The Newsies fandom (known as the Fansies) is also one of the most dedicated fandoms for a musical, which has helped this wonderful show have a life long after its Broadway closing. I wouldn’t consider myself a true Fansie but my girlfriend is and she talks about everyone involved in the show, even the tour cast, like they’re on a first name basis. If there was ever a show to build that close of a personal connection to an audience, I’m so glad it’s this one. -- source link
