Joy was a quiet, almost shy, member of the accounting team.  She dressed very conservatively, always wore glasses and little makeup.  Joy kept to herself and rarely talked about anything other than work.  In the event anyone asked about her plans on a Friday or her weekend on a Monday morning, she would inevitably say she and her husband stayed at home.  Everything about her was dull, almost dreary.Erik was one of the few people who she spoke to with any regularity.  Erik was a new employee at the company. He was young, tall,  and handsome, and for some reason, he seemed to take a liking to Joy.Joy kept up her normal vanilla persona, but Erik insisted on befriending her and began to grow on her.  One week, she surprised Erik by inviting him over for dinner.  “But please don’t tell anyone,” she warned.  “My husband and I are very private,” she added.  Erik agreed and was excited to expand his friendship.  He couldn’t say what it was about Joy that piqued his interest, but he was somehow fascinated with her.  He felt almost like he was going on a date when he arrived at Joy’s house early Friday evening.“Come on in,” Joy shouted from upstairs after he rang the bell. Her voice seemed to have a different quality to it, more confident somehow. “Make yourself at home, I’ll be right down,” she added warmly after he let himself in.A few minutes passed as Erik waited patiently in the living room.  He could hear Joy moving around upstairs. “Is, uh, your husband home?” Erik asked, partly to make conversation, but mostly out of curiosity.“No,” Joy said flatly. “He’s out of town. It’s just us.” She waited a beat before adding, “Is that okay?”“Yeah,” Erik said, wishing his voice hadn’t sounded so happy. “Sure, that’s fine,” he said trying to sound nonchalant. “Actually, could you give me a hand?” Joy called down.Erik made his way upstairs and stopped short when he saw Joy. She had immaculate makeup, was not wearing her glasses, and was wearing a tight, latex dress and holding a riding crop.  She smirked as the realization washed over Erik’s face.  “Nice outfit,” Joy said almost mockingly. “Take it off, now.” she said menacing him with the riding crop.“But…I…your husb…” Erik started to say.“I didn’t ask about him!” Joy barked. “Take it off, NOW!”Monday morning, Joy was back to normal. She was as dull and dreary as ever.  Erik was uncharacteristically late for work, making an excuse about his car to anyone who asked.
