ralphsmotorbike: According to historian Stephen Ambrose, amidst preparations for D-Day, Churchill advised General Eisenhower that he wanted to go along on the invasion on board the HMS Belfast. Ike refused to take the risk and told Churchill he was worth too much to the Allied cause. Churchill replied that he would sign on as a member of the ship’s crew, and there was nothing Ike could do about it. Ike asked his chief of staff, General Smith, to ask King George VI to talk to Churchill. The King assured Smith, “you boys leave Winston to me.” The King called Churchill and said, “Well, as long as you feel that it is desirable to go along, I think it is my duty to go along with you.” Churchill gave up.
