maiji: What to pack for your exile in the Makai, 2016brush pen and watercolour on etegami postcard. Goes with Satogokoro. This started as a doodle in my sketchbook dated Jan 2015 - it was an idea that was going to be part of Demon King! Urameshi but for one reason or another didn’t make it.My original intent was something silly/amusing. But as I pondered what Yusuke might have in his duffel bag, and what he might be thinking as he packed it, it honestly made me a little sad. After all, his three-year timeline statement was mostly bravado - he didn’t really know if or how he’d be coming back. There was a relatively subtle change in the way the manga and anime handled this part of the story. I’m not saying one was necessarily better or worse; the subtext and all of the ingredients were already there, and it’s interesting to see the differences in presentation. In the manga, his leaving was treated a little more casually, a little more autonomously. In the anime, they really played up the sense that he had no choice because he was being actively hunted down. And compare the two Yusuke/Keiko “I promise I’ll be back, wait for me” scenes: Keiko’s “I’ll wait for you forever!” at the beginning of the story, when he dies the first time, is quite a contrast with “Three years is a long time … who knows what’ll happen”. Not to mention Kuwabara’s conversation about how they’re going down different paths. It all makes the narrative at this point an even more poignant reflection of what happens to us all when we grow up. Change is inevitable. Everyone makes decisions, whether by choice or by circumstance, that open the world up to them in different ways, and move on with their own lives. It’s a cliche that all good things must come to an end because that’s life, and it’s also life that other things must begin. BUT NEVER FORGET THOSE WITH WHOM YOU WENT THROUGH SO MUCH AND ALWAYS TREASURE THOSE WHO PASSED THROUGH YOUR LIFE AND ENRICHED IT WHILE THEY WERE THERE ;______; More nostalgia reblog… thinking about the fun drawings and comics and stories and conversations I’ve had over the years and all the people I’ve met and the memories we’ve made, if only for a day or two, thanks to this wonderful series and fandom… -- source link
