shitloadsofwrestling: Rest in peace, Bruno Sammartino[October 6th, 1935 - April 18th, 2018] WWE.com posted the alarming news that former WWWF Heavyweight Champion Bruno Sammartino has passed away at the age of 82. A survivor of the Nazi invasions of Italy in the 1940s, Sammartino moved to the United States with his mother and father in 1950. Sammartino set a world record in 1959 by bench-pressing 565 pounds and was brought into the world of professional wrestling by Vincent J. McMahon. On May 17, 1963, Sammartino defeated Buddy Rogers in just 48 seconds to become the second ever WWWF Champion in front of nearly 20,000 fans at Madison Square Garden. For nearly 8 years, Sammartino reigned as the champion, withstanding wars against the likes of Gorilla Monsoon, Killer Kowalski, and George “The Animal” Steele. Bruno Sammartino was inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame in 2013. -- source link
