Meet the other half of our story, Mr. Chu, a Chinese immigrant working as a shoe cobbler making a living for his daughter. My Mom used to tell me stories of when she first arrived here from the Philippines, too scared to answer the phone for fear of being misunderstood. A single Mom and 20 years making her way in the US Navy, we were fortunate enough to live well, buy a home, and she eventually had the means to send me to art school.
