Tintoretto, Portrait of a Venetian, ca. 1550, San Diego Museum of Art sdma Tintoretto, born Jacobo Comin in 1518 died May 31, 1594. He got the nickname Tintoretto (little dyer) because his father was a dyer. One of the titans of Venetian Renaissance, Tintoretto supposedly had “Michelangelo’s design and Titian’s color” hanging at the entrance of his studio. With this claim Tintoretto styled himself as the ultimate artist of his time since one of the biggest contemporary debates concerned the superiority of design or color. Tintoretto thousands of huge canvases during his prodigious career but this small portrait of an unidentified Venetian man is one of my favorites. The heightened sense of reality makes him almost approachable -- source link
