diabolus1exmachina: Koenigsegg CC8S The CC8S was the first production car ever made by Koenigsegg. It was the culmination of 8 years development work that started out with Christian von Koenigsegg wanting to build his own car. Its minimalistic, clean, efficient and elegant styling truly set it apart from the peers of the time. The CC8S laid the foundation for all Koenigsegg car models when it comes to aesthetics, philosophy and functionality. The CC8S was produced between 2002 and 2003 in 6 examples, making it one of the rarest Koenigsegg models ever. 2 of the 6 cars were right hand drive. The engine was built in-house by Koenigsegg in Ängelholm, but based on a modular Ford V8 engine architecture. In order to reach 655 hp with full OBD compliance, meet emission regulations, have great reliability and drivability, Koenigsegg really had to re-engineer most of the engine. The engine was fitted with dry sump lubrication, forged piston and connecting rods, larger injectors, merged exhaust headers, ram air intake, centrifugal supercharger with a large intercooler etc. The cylinder heads had to be reworked and fitted with new camshafts and injectors. Head bolts had to be strengthened and the list goes on.In order to have a free flowing exhaust to meet the power needs and at the same time fit catalytic converters, Christian invented and patented the ‘Rocket cat’ principle. The system worked in a way that when the pre-cat created too much back pressure at high rpm, the overpressure was dynamically bypassed/overflowed directly to the main cat, which is fine in this scenario, as the main cat is fully warm then. A simple, clever solution with no moving parts. This solution increased power by nearly 100 hp compared to existing solutions. The CC8S pioneered the detachable, stowable carbon roof and the dihedral actuation doors that Koenigsegg has become famous for. The car won several awards, including the “Guinness World Record” for the Most Powerful Production Engine and awards for excellent design from both “Red Dot” in Germany and “Utmärkt Svensk Form” in Sweden. -- source link
