**MOVIE REVIEW TIME!**It’s been a while since I watched something new to me. So I FINALLY got around to watching The Witch yesterday. I remember seeing the previews that were released for this film and just thought it looked like it would be atmospherically terrifying. I was not let down. The ominous musical score, the style in which the movie was filmed in mostly natural light & the general claustrophobic feel of the film is really jarring. This is not a normal “jump-scare” type of film, while there are certainly a few of those in there. The panic and fear this film creates build with the story as continues forward. I was happy to see that while some of the movie did focus on possession the film wasn’t over-indulgent in special effects of any kind - which for the time period the film is set in made them all the more scary. The film claims it’s story & dialogue to be based on writings of the time as well. You can certainly imagine the director/writer saw Häxan a few times because I see some obvious parallels. If you enjoy creepy folklore surrounding witchcraft through the ages you will recognize some of the themes in this film. I watched this during the day and have to say that I agree with one IMDB reviewers when he said: “I found “The Witch” to be a generally unnerving film, and one which–though I would not place it in the pantheon of scariest flicks I’ve ever seen–had some moments that I’ll not easily forget.”I did sleep with a night light on last night. -- source link
