British Pattern 1827 Rifle Officer’s Sword with Presentation Inscription E. THURKLE, SOHO A PRESENTATION PATT. 1827 RIFLE BRIGADE SWORD TO AN OFFICER IN THE MADRAS VOLUNTEER RIFLE CORP, 37th, Madras Army Regt. and dated for 1880, with broad blind fullered 33in. slightly curved blade, the left face etched with scrolls and arabesques together with a ‘V.R.’ device and Queen’s crown, the reverse with similar scrolls interwoven with a banner reading 'PRESENTED TO MAJOR CROWLE ON HIS PROMOTION BY THE OFFICERS, NON COM’S. & PRIVATES OF No6. COM'Y 37TH M.R.V.C. AS A MARK OF THEIR ESTEEM JAN'Y 10TH 1880’, makers signature to left at forte and inlaid proof mark to the right, gothic three-bar iron hilt bearing the pierced device of the Rifle Regiment bugle, wire-bound fishskin grip and stepped pommel, complete in its iron scabbard with leather frog. -- source link
