Duchess Karoline Amalie of Hesse-Kassel (1804). Josef Maria Grassi (Austrian, 1757-1838). Oil on can
Duchess Karoline Amalie of Hesse-Kassel (1804). Josef Maria Grassi (Austrian, 1757-1838). Oil on canvas. Winterpalais, Gotha Thuringen, Germany. As she reads, the Duchess wears a close skirt and neckline ruff, a cherusque, of an Empire-style dress, but not with the high waistline. She also foregoes the short sleeves puffs of Empire dress and wears sleeves puffed and slashed on the upper arm. Due to Napoleon’s influence throughout Europe, she may have chosen the elements of style as fashion nationalism. -- source link
