rosalarian:misspixnmix:genevieve-ft:My 2 cents on… cheap commissions…! This is why I rarely do commissions. Whenever I am approached, I give what I believe is a fair price for the hours required to do the work, and often people will point out other artists doing it cheaper. That’s fine, and if you value the art of other artists offering cheaper commissions, then you should absolutely support them. But it’s up to me to decide how much my time is worth. I produce a lot of artwork for free, but commissions are work, and I deserve to get paid. Just because you can’t afford something, doesn’t mean it’s too expensive. Also, add in the costs of materials to your commission. Even as digital artists, we have the cost of the equipment and programs we use, without which we couldn’t create the work. Will they be using it commercially or personally? If they’re going to make money from my work, they need to pay me more than if it’s just for their personal use. Even if it’s for a charity. Charities budget for pens and paper and chairs and electricity and gas and printing pamphlets and computers and they need to add art to their budget too if they want art.Art is a luxury. It is. You won’t die without it (though life won’t be nearly as good.) You get to decide if buying art is worth not buying something else, if it’s worth saving up for. You don’t get to decide that artists have to live in poverty so you can continue to have their goods at prices that have them working for 50 cents an hour. -- source link
