But this was a work party, and they didn’t know what really ran through his mind. She did, and that mutual secret between them was making her worry at her bottom lip, as she smiled and nodded at the mundanity that spouted from their boring mouths. She caught his eye across the room. He was telling a joke, she thought, his mouth wide, lips parted in a pleasant smile. He was still talking, but she knew the sight of her had distracted him.
