I hear Mormons use the phrase SSA a lot.”Great question! For starters, the term SSA is referring to same-sex attraction. It is the preferred terminology among active Latter-day Saints. I think they choose to use this term because it feels softer than using the word gay. For awhile church leaders were labeling people gay if they “acted” on their attraction to men and reserved the term SSA for those who merely felt an attraction but had not violated the Church’s laws of chastity. Missionary applications and some church interview questions asked two separate questions: are you gay and separately, do you experience same-sex attraction? The missionary interview questions now reference only same-sex attraction. Side note, and as a personal view: ditch the term same-sex attraction especially if you are using the phrase “struggling with same-sex attraction.” You are perfect just the way you were created. Your sexuality is not a struggle—the way people treat you might be, but you aren’t broken and you aren’t relegated to a life of misery because of your sexuality. About the only time I could feel comfortable using SSA is in reference to someone who is bi-sexual. I hope this helps! -Blogger www.MormonsInNarnia.tumblr.com -- source link
