belindapendragon: juugmayne: donzlesdead: cartnsncreal: 4mysquad: !!!!You were not a thug, but a child!!!! #KennethCreighton #BLACKLIVESMATTER Seven years ago some in the local New York press called teenager Kenneth Creighton a thug. Guilty until proven innocent, Creighton was held in Rikers Island for nearly six brutal years — without ever being convicted of a crime. With no fanfare, no apology and no compensation for the time he lost and the troubles he survived, the charges were dropped against him and he was released. As it turns out, the local press and the City of New York were wrong. Creighton was an innocent young man who should’ve never spent a day in jail. Over the past few years I’ve seen countless young black men labeled as “thugs” when they were anything but. It’s a word that’s taken on some very ugly racial baggage and is overwhelmingly used against black men alone. You were not a thug, but a child — a 17-year-old victim of both media bias and a racist criminal justice system that was fully willing to violate your constitutional rights to a speedy trial. At every turn, the media should be about the business of exposing cases like yours instead of adding fuel to the fire. I want to use this space to help clear your name. Dior Creighton, Kenneth’s brother, fired a gun outside of a Bronx bodega. He pled guilty to this crime and is serving time for it now. His brother has long since denied being at that bodega on the day of the shooting. An anonymous source told the NYPD that they saw him pass a gun to his brother right before the shooting. That source, a confidential informant, has never been revealed. For all we know, the NYPD could have made it all up. According to court papers, another eyewitness identified Spruell as the man who passed the gun as well. The store owner also testified that the person who passed the gun was not Kenneth. In spite of all this, Spruell said police never interviewed him about the incident. This kind of goes without saying, but Kenneth had a hell of a difficult time on Rikers Island. It’s one of the most violent jails in our country. “You feel like a walking dead person,” Kenneth told local reporters. “I had to fight for a chair. I had to fight to eat. I lost my grandmother while I was in there. I had a son while I was in there. I was on suicide watch thinking about killing myself.” Sadly, teenager Kalief Browder, who was also jailed at Rikers for three years without being convicted of a crime, committed suicide when his charges were dropped after three brutal years.
