soprie: madamehearthwitch: iamemeraldfox: coolthingoftheday: Farmers in Indonesia introduce fish into their rice fields. The fish excrement acts as a fertilizer for the plants, while the plants attract insects and other pests, which serve as food for the fish. This process increases rice yield by up to 10%. @solarpunk-aesthetic It’s almost… bear with me here… it’s almost like nature knows what it’s doing. These aren’t… “natural” scenarios. It’s a combination of humans using biological advantages to their own advantage. The fish would no otherwise have entered the fields, at least not in such quantity at the right time, without human interevention. It’s like saying “GMO is disgusting and bad” neverminding that for thousands of years humans have been selectively breeding crops for higher yield, flavour, hardiness and nutrition. This isn’t “nature”, it’s just finding a better solution than pesticides. -- source link
