idlesuperstar:Jared Harris as Valery Legasov in Chernobyl [2019]So @cinemaocd watched the first episode with me because I wasn’t sure I could make it through on my own. I am not going to make any other gifs despite it being unbelievably good because it feels massively disrespectful to do so. (I wasn’t even sure about this but we decided Jared in his jammies was an ok thing to gif :) ). I’m part of one of the generations who grew up with the looming fear of nuclear war. I had nightmares when I was ten, eleven, twelve, that I can still remember vividly. I’ve been too scared all my life to watch Threads. I read one page of Where The Wind Blows once when it came out and still cannot bear to think of it. I was a teenager when Chernobyl happened and it was terrifying, and I had no idea of the reality of it. Every generation has its apocalyptic fear I guess, the thing that you feel powerless (as a person-on-the-street) to prevent. This one is mine. I never realised that not everyone lived with this overwhelming dread of nuclear weapons until I was talking to a friend who is a decade younger than me who said she never worried about nuclear war but grew up with a fear of environmental catastrophe. (Well, yes. Look where we are now.) A friend told me he was talking to some folk once and they had no idea what ‘the bomb that will bring us together’ in The Smiths’ Ask was referring to. Anyway. This is (based on one ep) incredibly good, extremely distressing (and anger-inducing, and terrifying) and despite being difficult, well worth watching. -- source link
