dynamicafrica:Kindumba: Exploring the Diverse Nature of ‘Africa Hair’.The Kindumba project, created by Angolan photographer Alice Marcelino, was initially meant to explore the relationship between Africans and people of African descent, and their hair. Taken in simple close-up style, the images are void of facial features and expressions as visages are covered up, hidden or are facing a different direction to the camera lens. Similar to the mid-century hair portraits by Nigerian photographer J. D. Okhai Ojeikere, these faceless photographs highlight and celebrate the beauty and diversity of ‘African hair,’ in some of its various textures, at a pivotal time in the dialogue surrounding ‘African hair’.Kindumba means ‘my hair’ in Kimbumdo, one of the two Bantu languages from northern Angola.“The idea was born from my exposure to the black cultural diversity I found in London, particularly in Brixton where I live,” states Alice.“It is connected to my own experience and part of the journey I made to understand the reasons behind the collective anxiety about our natural features.”H/T: True Africa.Twitter | Facebook | Instagram | Pinterest | Soundcloud | Mixcloud -- source link
