We are thankful for the artists who make Roman Susan exist. This week, we are highlighting the artists on our Board of Directors, and looking back at the work they shared with us before becoming the leadership that guides RS today. Siobhan Leonard is the President of Roman Susan, and has been a Director guiding our work since 2017. Siobhan’s <> was the first artist proposal realized at Roman Susan. For 15 days in October 2013, she turned our storefront into a communal stop-motion animation studio. With 75+ neighborhood participants, Siobhan hosted sprawling group drawing sessions, which she channeled into a 9-minute video. The drawings included in this post are from October 11 – drawn by Jack, Ella, William, Josephina, Soledad, April, Anton, Julia, Makiko, Dan, Emily & Paige – and October 13, drawn by 30+ people. You can watch the animated video through romansusan.org/captureIn our first year of operations, this is the first time our doors felt as wide open as we would want them to be – and during this year of distance and isolation, we are thankful to Siobhan for setting us on a more participatory and communal trajectory. <> was literally larger than our space – for the concluding celebration, the screening of the film extended over in our neighbor’s storefront, kindly hosted by Roberta Schmatz in what is now Archie’s Cafe. Thank you to all our neighbors – we are looking forward to next year when we’ll be able to gather together again in this spirit with new artist projects! If you would like to support the ongoing experiment that is Roman Susan, you can give us your feedback via romansusan.org/our-ongoing-work or make a contribution or through romansusan.org/support -- source link
