Located in #Kiev’s historic neighbourhood of Podil, @619studio eschews the vintage aesthetic of your typical tattoo parlour for minimalist sophistication and sculptural simplicity. Interior architects @balbekbureau designed the space as a contemporary art workshop to reflect the Studio’s founder Ukrainian artist @nesheva_ulyana’s creative ethos. As she says, “simplicity is the ultimate goal and the highest form of complexity.” Aiming for an open-plan configuration, the team removed all the doors and increased the height of the existing openings between the reception area, studio space and artists’ lounge, as well as added new ones, intentionally exposing the plasterboard, brick and foam wall construction. A bespoke 400-kilo graphite concrete table that snakes its way from the entrance vestibule to the lounge serving as both a reception desk and work surface for the artists, further enhances the project’s sculptural sensibility with its sinuous form and hand-beaten rough edges, as does the sculpture of a boy by Ukrainian artist Сhristina Ridzel that greets visitors.
