“To move, to breathe, to fly, to float; To gain all while you give; To roam the roads of lands remote; To travel is to live”, Hans Christian Andersen eloquently remarked in his autobiography more than 100 years ago. Andersen’s poetic assertion comes to life at Norway’s Atlantic Ocean Road, an engineering fit connecting a series of small islands, islets and reefs with the mainland across several causeways, viaducts and bridges. Known as the most scenic route in the world, the 8.3km route take drivers on a rollercoaster ride of twists, turns, and steep slopes which is made all the more exhilarating by the scenic beauty of the country’s coastal landscape. One of the road’s highlights, the Storseisundet Bridge (pictured) will definitely make you want to fly thanks to the optical illusions its unique design causes.
