Thirteen Days of Halloween TFs 2: Day 11 Dullahan She tried for a fifth time to start the car only to hear the sputtering gasp of her hopes dying. The engine chugged and whirred but failed to turn. She sunk her head against the steering wheel. No reception, no car, no idea where she was, other than screwed. All to attend some stupid Halloween party out in the middle of nowhere, hardly worth getting lost on a road with no houses or street lamps that cut through for forest for a seemingly endless distance. She got out of the car and slammed the door behind her, leaning against it and wrapping her arms around herself. She suddenly wished she had wore something warmer, the air was frigid as if it were the end of November, not the unseasonably warm temperature it had been when she had left her house. She looked down at the somewhat skimpy armor she wore under the thin coat, it was cheap and didn’t cover enough to keep her warm. Why couldn’t the party have had a normal theme, this medieval thing wasn’t really her idea of fun, but her friend had begged her to come, even going so far as to finding her this costume. As she fretted over her costume and tried to make up her mind if it was worth braving the cold to find… something, she heard a noise. She strained to make out the sound as it slowly approached, it sounded like… hooves? She peered down the road and saw a shape moving, there was a carriage being pulled by two horses, illuminated by a feeble lantern. She almost laughed, not quite the savior she had wished for, but at least riding a stage coach home would make for an interesting story in the morning if she could get a ride. As the coach slowly approached she noticed something odd. There was no driver, the seat was empty and the horses seemed content to trot down the road by themselves. As the wagon approached she tried to call out to the horses and was happy that they approached and stopped beside her. She walked to the side of the carriage and looked inside the small window. It looked old, worn out and tattered. What once had been a fine fabric was faded and torn, bit of paint chipped from the wood where there weren’t holes, and even the horses looked shabby though oddly spirited. Half afraid the carriage would fall apart she gingerly climbed up to the coach’s seat and instantly regretted it.She wind the wind get sucked out of her lungs, and her vision went dark. Everything was black and she couldn’t breath, a burning sensation threatened to consume her and she tried to cry out to no avail. Suddenly the flames died and she was left cold and confused, lying on the ground a short distance from the carriage. Well her head was at least. Through large dark pupils the girl watched as her body touched it self in confusion, she was controlling it, but seeing it from afar, like trying to do a complex action in the reflection of a mirror. She slowly staggered down from the carriage and made her way to what she could only image was her head seeing as her body ended at the neck, her head having being replaced with a cold flame that made her body look pale and blue. Her armor also looked shiny and detailed in a way that it hadn’t before. She bent down and watched her own fingers grasp at her, eventually grabbing her own head by the hair and dangling it oddly. She couldn’t help but to smile a grin that was far too toothy for a human at the image of her holding her own head, and she took a moment to get a better grip before climbing back onto the carriage. With a crack of the reigns the dark horses burst into a full gallop and the battered carriage tore down the road at a breakneck speed toward the party. Maybe somewhere there would need a ride… -- source link
