Courtyard, Library of Congress, Washington, DC, 2018.Early arrival at a reception hosted by the Italian Ambassador in the Library courtyard prior to a performance by the Quartetto di Cremona in the Coolidge Auditorium. Great evening - lovely weather for an outdoor reception and a truly great concert. The Quartetto, famous for its recordings of the Beethoven quartets, played the Paganini Quartet, 4 Stradivarius string instruments including the violin used by Antonio Paganini himself. As one might expect, the music at the concert funded by the Italian Embassy and the Instituto Italiano di cultura was amazing. And attendees were within a few tens of meters from a large fraction of the Stradivarius instruments still extant, the four used by the Quartet and the 6 held by the Library of Congress and displayed in the adjacent Wittall Pavillion (where there are also some other instruments from famous Cremona luthiers on display). -- source link
