thetwelvecaesars: panisroseus: thetwelvecaesars: panisroseus: The Roman emperor Caligula enjoyed bathing in gold. According to the historian Suetonius he poured pieces of gold and other valuable golden artifacts over the ground to walk on them barefoot, and wallowed in them with his whole body for hours. Read more Photo from the trustees of the British Museum I love the coin, but I am afraid that your facts are wrong. Nowhere in Suetonius can I find that Caligula bathed in gold. He had baths with expensive oils and ate food coated in gold, though. Caligula, in Suetonius’ account, did not walk barefoot on gold. This is not historically correct as far as I know and if you would care to point to the section of Suetonius that says this, please do. - TheTwelveCaesars “At last, being seized with an invincible desire of feeling money, taking off his slippers, he repeatedly walked over great heaps of gold coin spread upon the spacious floor, and then laying himself down, rolled his whole body in gold over and over again.” - Suetonius, Life of Twelve Caesars, Cal. XLII AH! You are correct! And I was wrong. I apologise. I didn’t notice it before due to the fact it right after Suetonius was talking about Julia Drusilla II and New Years. Sometimes Suetonius puts so much into one little section. Thank you and I once again apologise. T_T - The Twelve Casears It’s fine. There are a lot of little facts there, which people tend to forget..it underestimates the emperor’s eccentric nature. XD -- source link
