New In the gallery: BAMARA PEOPLE (circa 1880-1920) Comb Mask, 1951,wood, 21 x 6.5 x 6 The Bamara people are primarily from Mali in West Africa. The artworks they created, including sculpture, masks, pottery and weavings are used for cultural and religious purposes. Aside from the intrinsic aesthetic value of the artworks of the Bamara, theirs, and other African peoples were of significant influence to early 20th century European modernists. The geometric planes and the simple but elegant surfaces of much of African art served as an inspiration for artists such as Picasso Braque and others as they began to explore radical forms of painting and sculpture in the early 20th century. #fineart #africanart #modernist #modernism #picasso #santa fe #canyon road -- source link
