The letter, written in 1246, was sent in response to a message from the Pope asking the Mongols to stop killing Catholics. Guyuk probably didn’t really understand the Pope’s position in Europe, but issued the standard Mongol demand for abject surrender. This sort of bluster was common in Mongol communications with other societies – one of the Mongols’ skills was using their terrifying reputation for violence to intimidate their enemies into giving up without a fight.
